Happy Holidays!
Has another year flown by so quickly? Time to sit down and take stock, to reflect on the year gone by and write something for posterity (can't trust to memory anymore!). We've been adopted by two cats that Duncan has aptly named Cute and Cuddly. We're running a little behind as we're packing up for our first Christmas away - we'll be celebrating the holidays with our families in Edmonton and Canmore this year.
We've spent lots of time in Alberta this year, as Kathleen was on sabbatical and learning new techniques at the U of A, starting with taking the family to Edmonton for July. Her research also took her to N. Manitoba to study salt springs and mine tailings, to Banff and Calgary for the hot springs research, and to Salt Lake City for a conference. In between the extensive trips, she enjoyed cycling to work, the chance to catch up on her writing (manuscripts and proposals), and successfully applied for tenure and promotion. (To learn more about her research check out her updated web page) Still, the fall was a difficult time, as her Grandma Wiggins passed away in Sept., followed by her Grandpa Steele's death in Oct.
Steve had some big changes this year too. At Prairie Architects, he worked on a small low income housing community, a community hall, prototype northern housing, environmentally friendly buildings, and wrote specifications for many other projects. Steve finally resigned from Prairie and joined Smith-Carter Architects and Engineers as a specifications writer. Their website has lots of fantastic pictures. He took a couple of weeks off in between, and has really enjoyed it since starting in early December. The commute is shorter and will be easy to scoot.
Duncan (almost 8) and Andrew (5) have advanced into grade 2 (French) and preschool. Andrew had a busy year of tests that determined the underlying neurological cause of his difficulties with speech and some movements, and has worked hard for his physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Duncan (and Steve) really enjoyed archery lessons, and Duncan had another summer of soccer. Both boys started gymnastics this fall and seem to be naturals. At home, they love computer games (Duncan is amazing!), Lego (of course), and stuffed animals and puppets (stuffies).
There's never a shortage of things to do. Steve and Kathleen continue curling in the university fun league, with Kathleen skipping again and serving as treasurer. We did the big trip to Alberta in July by car and included a trip to Drumheller to see the dinosaurs, Canmore (Duncan climbed his first real mountain), and even stopped off at the town where they film Corner Gas on the way back through Saskatchewan. Steve and Kathleen even took time out to see two big shows - Mamma Mia! and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Dracula. As for all the snow this year- well, since we're shoveling it anyway, might as well make a big pile that doubles as a slide and a snow cave. Don't worry about us Winnipegers, we've stocked up on hot chocolate and marshmallows. Thanks as always to Mike for hosting our web site. Here's a new crop of pictures, organized by themes as usual. Enjoy!
