[translated from an equivalent German message] :hello user.hp3000 quite a while ago, I have put together a bunch of tips on the HP3000-L Internet discussion forum for the members of a users group. Here is a copy of those tips, hoping that they may also be somewhat interesting or useful for you. (...) Access to HP3000-L is basically free of charge, except maybe for the cost of Internet access or eMail traffic. However, depending on the chosen type of access, you can easily spend quite an amount of time with lurking or even actively participating. Thus it seems like a good idea to compare the different available access methods and select the one that matches your personal needs and gives you the most benefit. HP3000-L Frequently Asked Questions -> http://www.3k.com/faq/hpfaqi.html Weekly Highlights (with links to details and search) -> http://www.interex.org/3000lsum/summary.html Threaded Archive (recent postings arranged by topic) -> http://www.optc.com/Webbot/ Access via the "mirrored" Newsgroup (read & write) -> news:comp.sys.hp.mpe Newsgroup access & search via the DejaNews web site -> http://www.dejanews.com/bg.xp?level=comp.sys.hp.mpe Sending questions or posting via eMail -> mailto:HP3000-L@raven.utc.edu Sending eMail subscription requests to the listserv "robot" -> mailto:listserv@raven.utc.edu While eMail to HP3000-L@raven.utc.edu is forwarded to all of the subscribed members via the distribution list, messages sent to listserv@raven.utc.edu are are received and processed by a small "robot". With the help of the listserv program you can add your- self to the distribution list, control several options related to the subscription, as well as -in case you do not like it- get off the distribution list again. Here are a few of the typical commands handled by listserv: subscribe HP3000-L your name (puts you on the distribution list, "your name" is optional) set HP3000-L mail (a copy of every posting is forwarded to you; the default) set HP3000-L digest (you only get a single message with all postings per day) set HP3000-L index (you get a single message per day with only topics/subjects) set HP3000-L nomail (stay on the list but suspend forwarding, e.g. while absent) signoff HP3000-L (removes you from the distribution list) Mails to listserv@raven.utc.edu can have any subject you like, since the "robot" parses its commands from the body text of the message. You should send "plain text", no Microsoft RTF, MS Word, HTML, or one of the other strange file formats. Also try to stay away from those pesky WinMAIL.DAT attachments or WhoKnowsWhat.VCF business-cards or signatures. For some time now, Raven has got a newer ListServ version and thus also provides an enhanced web interface. This allows to read current or archived postings, submit own postings, search the archives by keyword, as well as control eMail subscription and options... -> http://raven.utc.edu/archives/hp3000-l.html I hope, all of the above notes have not been too deterring or even frightening to you, as the HP3000-L forum can be quite entertaining and educational. People are quite helpful and polite in general, even when some of the threads tend to be (far) off-topic concerning the overall HP 3000 subject area ;-) Have fun. Lars Appel (lappel@grc.hp.com or lars_appel@hp.com) PS: In case there should be open questions, even if it is only on those strange emoticons like :-) or ;-) or :-( that can be found on the Internet quite frequently (besides tons of strange acronyms or abbreviations)... my eMail address is not a secret ;-)
